The Crossing

Somewhere I saw a painting,
Though I can’t remember where.
It showed General George and his gallant troops
Crossing the Delaware.

Now George was a man who used his head
Of this he took great pride.
He told his troops,“Go find a boat,
And we’ll row to the other side.”

When they returned and loaded up,
He stood bravely in the bow.
And though it was a treacherous trip
He would get them there somehow.

But, was he needed, posing there
To guide them to the shore?
No! He stood because each time he sat,
They handed him an oar!
