The Pony Express 1860-61
They were small, slim, strong, lithe
Young cowboys, healthy, eager to ride
With mailbags hung from their sinewy steeds
Galloped California to Missouri sating mail needs
Stations, fresh horses, set ‘bout every 10 miles
W/refilled canteens, riders logged a 100 mile trial
Pony Bob boasted the longest while
On his original horse—‘bout 37 miles
They were plucky pioneers, made from the right stuff
Dealt with pernicious Indians to best them or bluff
Delivered the mail to news-starved settlers
Midst danger from melee of moccasined meddlers
These vigilant men were couriers of communication
The Pony Express bolstered our economy in 1860-61
Government aid was lost at the outset of the Civil War
Telegraph replaced The Pony Express on October 24
We recognize and honor these brave men, who
Fostered fire in their hearts to courageously fend
Many an ambush and Indian skirmish
With the collective energy of a whirling dirvish
In this, the 150th Year of their genesis
