This Month, Support a Caregiver
November is National Family Caregiver Month and the theme is “Believe in Yourself, Protect Your Health, Reach Out for Help, and Speak Up for Your Rights.” National Family Caregiver Month is a time to support family caregivers everywhere and to raise awareness of family caregivers, what they do, and programs for family caregivers. To be a caregiver does not necessarily mean you are living with or caring for the person all the time but it means that you are providing some help, such as assistance with shopping, financial matters, and personal care or supervision. Currently in the United States, there are over 50 million family caregivers who provide over $360 billion in caregiving each year. Family caregivers provide over 80 percent of all caregiving services and about 40 percent of all family caregivers provide some level of nursing care, such as medication management.
There are many stresses involved with being a caregiver. Often times the caregiver is so involved in caring for others that their own well-being and heath is neglected which affects the caregiver physically, emotionally, socially, and financially. Taking care of one’s self is essential to providing care so caregivers must find a balance to taking care of their needs while taking care of their loved one needs.
Here are some tips to help caregivers take care of themselves while caring for others:
Take One Day at a Time
Care giving is a journey that will have its ups and downs so remember to set realistic goals, maintain your sense of humor, and explore religious beliefs and spiritual values.
Educate Yourself about your Loved Ones Disease or Illness
Tap Your Social Resources
Other family members and friends can play key roles in helping you so plan a meeting to find out what each person may or may not be able to offer.
Use Community Resources
Unfortunately, many caregivers delay seeking help until they are virtually exhausted. Contact your Elder Helpline, 1-800-96ELDER or 1-800-963-5337 for resources available to assist you with caring for your loved one.
Make Your Health a Priority
As a caregiver, it is often difficult to find the time to take care of your needs. However, make the time to get enough rest, eat properly, exercise, and relax because you deserve it.
