The Fountain of Youth — Exercise and a Healthy Diet

Almost 500 years ago, not so very far from here, Ponce de Leon searched in vain for the Fountain of Youth. And while he was unsuccessful in his endeavor, we have come to realize that the Fountain of Youth is based in our everyday lives — when we incorporate a healthy diet and exercise routine.

Many Seniors feel that exercise is unnecessary, or even unhealthy past a certain age; but a moderate amount of exercise several times per week can be one of the most effective methods of fighting heart disease, preventing osteoporosis, improving mobility and stability and combating depression. In fact, the U.S. Surgeon General maintains that it is far safer to exercise than to not exercise, and that the benefits of some daily aerobic activity pay in dividends.

Seniors need a combination of aerobic activity and strength training throughout the week. Examples of simple aerobic activities are walking, swimming or dancing. These activities can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. Take a 30-minute walk after dinner or enroll in a dance class. Strength training may require a bit more commitment, such as joining a health club, but is just as important. Our bodies experience significant muscle loss as we age, and keeping these muscles strong and toned can help maintain mobility, flexibility and prevent falls. Creative Seniors can find activities like yard work and sports like golf or tennis to supplement their strength training needs. As always, you should talk to your doctor before beginning any new program and start simply and slowly, gradually building up your time and effort as you improve.

Perhaps the hardest parts of continuing an exercise program are the monotony and doing it alone. However, there are programs available at local Senior centers in most counties that are geared to Senior fitness. These group classes can help you begin and stick with a weekly exercise routine and have fun with friends along the way.
