Quick guide to Medicare Part D annual enrollment period
November 15 – December 31
As the holiday season approaches, so does the time to review your current prescription drug coverage. During the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, you have the option to join or change Medicare prescription drug plans (Part D), including Medicare Advantage plans.
Before the enrollment period starts, it is important for you to prepare by gathering information needed to compare and make decisions. Just as there are many plan options for you to choose from, there is much information, which can either help guide you or make the process confusing. Here are some important points regarding information you may receive.
October 1 — Prescription drug plan companies may begin sending marketing materials for 2009. You do not have to act on these materials unless you are considering changing plans and wish to review their information and compare your options.
October 2 — People whose 2008 plan terminates in 2009 will have received notices from their plans. This is a good time to look for a new plan for coverage in 2009.
October 31 — Medicare beneficiaries who have a Part D or Medicare Advantage plan will receive an Annual Notice of Change by this date. Review your plan’s changes to decide whether the plan will continue to meet your prescription needs for 2009. For instance, make sure that the plan still provides needed coverage at affordable prices.
Read your mail — Do not discard letters or notices from the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Social Security Administration, your current prescription drug plan, Medicare Advantage plan, or union/employer health plan. Read all notices carefully and follow the instructions accordingly.
Compare your options — In early October, the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Finder and Medicare Options Compare online tools will be updated, providing 2009 plan options and information.
