Preventing Consumer Fraud during the Holidays

While Seniors are preparing to be with family members for fun and food during the holiday season, this time of year also brings with it an increased risk of consumer fraud and identity theft. According to the Federal Trade Commission, appropriately 9 million Americans had their identities stolen last year. Identity theft happens when someone uses another person's personal identifying information (such as a Social Security Number or name), without permission.

Some common types of fraud against Seniors include credit card, telemarketing and bank fraud. Credit card fraud involves making unauthorized purchases or using the victim's personal financial information to open a credit card account. Telemarketing fraud can involve a telephone call offering a prize in exchange for money from the Senior. Bank fraud may involve individuals taking out a loan in the victim's name.

Although fraud can happen to anyone, there are precautions that can be taken to prevent one from becoming a victim. Here are some tips to help reduce your chances of becoming a victim of fraud:

Request annual free copies of credit reports at 1-877-322-8228 or www.annualcreditreport.com. Review for errors and dispute inaccurate information with credit bureaus.

Review bank and/or credit card statements regularly for unauthorized charges.

Do not give personal financial information over the telephone unless you initiate the telephone call.

To help reduce telemarketing calls, list your telephone number with the National Do Not Call Registry at 1-888-382-1222 or www.donotcall.gov

Shred mail that has personal financial information, such as credit card statements or bank account statements

Remember consumer fraud is a crime and should be reported to local law enforcement. Report suspected cases of fraud against a Senior to the Florida Abuse Hotline at 1-800-96ABUSE (1-800-962-2873). For the hearing impaired, the Abuse Hotline can be accessed through the Florida Relay Service at 1-800-453-5145 TDD. It is available 24 hours a day and seven days per week.

Do not forget to enjoy the holiday with friends and family, but remember to safely guard your personal financial information.
