Food for Thought

While many people start the New Year with New Year's resolutions to try to lose weight and eat healthier, many others are trying to figure out how to pay for the food they need to survive. Everyone knows and is feeling the effects of how the cost of food has skyrocketed. The choice between food and medicine is a real dilemma for many elders.

In these hard economic times, more people are turning to charitable agencies to help them with the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. These agencies are trying to stretch their limited resources to meet an ever-growing demand for help. For those who are able and motivated to do so, your donations of food, clothing, blankets and cash are greatly needed and appreciated. Thank you for your generosity.

There are food-mobiles, food pantries, home delivered meal programs and congregate meal sites that operate throughout our community. The Elder Helpline can direct you to programs located nearest to you.

Additionally, some Seniors may qualify for food stamps. The Department of Children & Families (DCF) is the state agency responsible for the food stamp program. Learn more about eligibility and benefits at their Web site: www.dcf.state.fl.us. An application for food stamps and Medicaid can be completed online. The DCF Call Center telephone number is 1-866-762-2237.

Help may be available for food, rent, utilities, prescriptions, housing or other needs from various community agencies. For Seniors who need help, please call the Elder Helpline at 1-800-262-2243 for a list of agencies that provide the goods or services needed.
