Rodeos, Singers and Airmen
This month Senior Times continues with our series of profiles honoring our veterans. Senior Times writer Laura Kubitz visited with Tuskegee Airman Steve Lawrence and learned a lot about his experiences with this remarkable group of black military airmen. These brave young men joined the military at a time when many people believed black men lacked the skill, intelligence and courage to become airmen.
They proved them wrong. In fact, the Tuskegee Airmen overcame segregation and prejudice to become one of the most highly respected fighter groups of World War II.
The Tuskegee Airmen included pilots, navigators, bombardiers, maintenance and support staff, instructors, and all the personnel who kept the planes in the air.
For those interested in old pictures of historic Hog Town, you may want to visit some of the local bookstores this month to meet with the author of “Historic Gainesville Photographs.” The Orlando-based author plans to make a couple of stops to sign copies of his book. He will also be conducting guided walking tours around Gainesville.
Laura Wright shares what she learned about a local singing group known as The SweetNotes, compromised primarily of Seniors, who lend their time and voice to residents of hospitals and nursing homes.
This month Senior Times welcomes another writer, Elizabeth Wilson. In this edition Elizabeth writes about the Ocala Shrine Rodeo. Proceeds for these professional rodeo events go to Shriners hospitals. Over the years the club has raised greater than $1 million. So if you have a hankering to see some bronco busting, barrel racing and steer wrestling, Ocala is the place to be in August. Plus, it all goes to a good cause.
Writer Evelyn Kelly takes Senior Times readers on a trip to Guatemala this month, so be sure to read about her travels.
