Happy Summer
Heat index of 110? Are you serious?
While not record-breaking temperatures (or so I'm told), it sure felt that way on Father's Day as I tried to keep cool while picking the corn from my little garden.
I served up a couple of the little ears to my youngest son and granddaughter. They wanted more. That's a good sign. So my son went out to the garden, plucked a couple of ears himself and ate them on the spot. Now that's some sweet corn -- and it doesn't get any fresher than that. The tomatoes are not yet ripe, but we picked some for my mother-in-law, who took them home and made "delicious" fried green tomatoes. So far, the garden is a great success -- despite the ravaging heat and pounding rainstorms. (Yes, you can stand up fallen corn stalks.)
But enough about the weather and the garden...
This month, Senior Times Magazine welcomes a new writer to Tower Publications: Betty Kossick, of Ocala. Betty has been a freelance writer for the past 38 years and has no intentions of stopping anytime soon. "I plan to write until I'm 100, so bring 'em on!" she said.
Betty recently visited with one of the best liars in Ocala: JaCk Copeland (no, that's not a typo, he spells it that way, no lie) -- and JaCk's got the awards to show for it. Betty shares what she learned from this grandmaster of storytellers in this edition of Senior Times. We are also introducing Betty's new column, "Around the Corner."
Chris Wilson is new to Senior Times but not new to the world of writing and publishing. On Memorial Day last month, Chris attended a celebration in Gainesville honoring some unsung heroes of World War II: The WASP (Women Air Force Service Pilots). Chris talked with three of these remarkable women, and shares with us their stories, as well as a little history of the WASP contribution to our freedom.
Ever grilled a mushroom? Well, for those of you hardy enough to venture into the heat to do some good ol' Fourth of July grilling, Allison Candreva offers up some grilling tips you might not have thought of before. Makes me hungry.
What do you get when you mix engineering, physics, music, and a love for teaching, reading and writing? Well, in the case of local author Mary Anna Evans, you get an award-winning mystery writer, musician and educator.
I recently had the opportunity to meet with Mary Anna to learn about her personal history, her murder mystery series and her writing process. Mary Anna is clearly an artist who uses both sides of her brain.
So find a comfy and cool spot, sit back with a beverage of your choice and enjoy this edition of the Senior Times Magazine. §
