Transitions in the Journey of Life

Most transitions in life are stressful and at times painful, but I prefer to look at them as challenging and adventurous experiences. Perhaps one of the most difficult for some is the transition from adulthood into seniority.

This is a slow and almost imperceptible step that is easy for some but difficult for many. Whoever gets to this point in life has much to be grateful for. I am a firm believer that in every stage in life there is a role destined to be played and a mission to fulfill. At the level of seniority just by being there we become an example to others. Our wisdom is unique, as it is based not on what books have to say, but on the experience of each individual, which is different from everybody else.

Seniors often reflect an inner peace, which is soothing and comforting to others. The courage they exhibit when coping with the conformities of old age is an example to the younger generations. Their involvement in volunteer community programs and charities is of great help to the community. The Seniors that find this transition more difficult are usually the ones that have difficulty relinquishing the power they had at a younger age. Some fight to the end to keep the illusion of staying young forever. That is a losing battle, unnecessary and damaging to their self-esteem. Seniority is not a time for gratification of narcissistic needs; it is a time for sharing the treasures of seniority. For some it is like a return to childhood but with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that they have survived and mastered many difficult times along the path of life and for that they should all be proud.
